Fear was now our companion. We maneuvered the car around on the highway--there were no other cars or lights anywhere in the vicinity. What did it feel like? When I was eight, I had climbed up a short ladder in our basement so I could try to pull out a plug. I accidentally placed my fingers on the prongs. An electrical charge ran up my arm, causing me to fall backward off the ladder. It was somewhat painful; however, it frightened me more than it hurt. That was a very similar feeling.

From Fernley to Tonopah we drove an additional 6 hours. It was as bad in Tonopah as it had been in Reno. I felt blessed that we'd traveled thus far without incident. Heather and I had formed a routine of communication. When lights would appear in the distance, she would call out "Snowplow" which meant to slow to a crawl because we'd soon be in a white-out as they drove by, blinding us with the offspray of snow. I'd give her a heads-up on cars coming up from behind so she wouldn't think I'd dozed if she heard repetitive thumping sounds from shoulder grooves when I'd scoot over to allow for passers. I wouldn't go so far as to say we were getting good at this, but we'd quickly come up with survival skills. It was a team effort.

There are examples of unfortunate car insurance claims. We don't have anything that resembles sleds around here. We have cheered for folks going down their big hills using their dish pans, trash can lids, old road signs, and parts of a still. The problem is a lot of these competitors don't realize you can't sled unless there is snow. It doesn't work on dry blacktop. I plowed around in the snow that was up to my thighs, looking around the porch and glancing into some of the windows. Inside it looked like a cottage, wood floors and walls. A fireplace. I looked out to Walloon lake frozen and silent. The few flakes turned heavy just then and the dark clouds overhead seemed to break open. A wind came down and in minutes the air filled with snow. I struggled back to my car and could hear the whistling of the storm. It was ferocious. I could not see and I turned at the car door. It was a blizzard. The cottage was no longer visible. I had never seen a storm like this before. Storms came up and you went inside, but I couldn't see my hand in front of my face.

Pride and Prejudice - Read it first, because not only is it wonderful, it is her most famous book. In fact, truly one of the most famous novels of all time. The characters are so full of life, they very nearly leap from the page. This is especially true of the heroine, Elizabeth Bennett. For the best movie version, try the 1995 BBC epic with Jennifer Ehle (another American, no less) as Elizabeth Bennett and Colin Firth as the quintessential Mr. Darcy.

At this time, I took the Harry Street exit to be able to get my daughter to class at WSU on time. I turned onto Hillside to go north. Once I made it to the Kellogg Flyover exit onto Hillside, the traffic that was being redirected from I-35 was now entering Hillside. This traffic caused major congestion from Kellogg to approximately 9th Street in Wichita.

The 17th is an uneventful par three, with no blood drawn. The final hole is a great closer. It's a dogleg right that again requires a tee ball that stays short of a creek about 250 yards out. Anything right ends up in the trees, and trying to hit it long and straight off the tee ends up over the fairway and with a big tree blocking your approach in. Calling my putt aggressive is one way to put it - I blew past the hole and onto the fringe. Not my finest close, with four putts securing yet another inferior showing relative to Hansard.

In a recent article published by the Associated Press via ABC news Allstate, the second largest auto insurance provider in Texas, announced that the number of insurance claims paid out as a result of storms and bad weather that had absolutely nothing to do with snow was on the rise. Drivers in the area can expect to see the numbers on those free auto insurance quotes going up, and they're not the only ones. Drivers all across the country could be feeling the sting if this trend continues.
